Take a read at this Reuters article on Apple’s “subversive advertising” of the Apple Watch during the Olympics and how it can undermine the major advertiser and sponsor: Apple’s Products

Apple Inc is threatening to crash Samsung’s expensive Olympics party. …

U.S. sprinter Trayvon Bromell has tweeted a photo of himself wearing the USA-themed band of red, white and blue on the same arm as his Olympic rings tattoo. Defending decathlon champion Ashton Eaton has also shared a photo of himself on Twitter wearing the band. …

Apple is not promoting the new bands directly – many buyers say they are reading about them on blogs – but at least one customer says he regards the band as Olympics merchandising.

Nelson Imana, a visiting sports fan from Chicago, bought two bands on the way to watch Olympic volleyball. He said they reminded him of the kind of exclusive merchandise sold at the Masters golf tournament in Augusta, Georgia. …

Like in times past, where say Samsung is a big Superbowl sponsor, but Apple ends up getting a lot of free advertising, and possibly winning the branding battle, because the audience sees on live TV athletes using Apple devices to take the after the game pictures and whatnot. Or, like Richard Jefferson of the Cleveland Cavaliers using an Apple iPhone 6 or 6S battery case on-stage during ESPN’s award event.

The Watch’s interchangeable strap or band design is a huge strategic win that no other watch or fitness band company thought to take advantage of. What, they spend a few tens of thousands of dollars designing country colored nylon bands, sell it in the run-up and during the Olympics, and voila, they get millions of dollars of free advertising from athletes, athletes’ family/entourage, and fans wearing Watches while on world TV or social media. (If you read the Reuters article, the rules for product advertising during the Olympics are not surprising though. Waiting on some athlete, Colin Kaepernick style, to have a TV interview with the logo of their headphones taped over.)

Next up is the Apple slow roll. There’s pent-up demand for a gen 2 Watch. Watch 1 essentially seeded the market, enabling the creation of a large 3rd party band market. This in turn amplifies the attractiveness of getting a gen 2 Watch. Combined with WatchOS 3, I can see a doubling of gen 2 Watch sales over gen 1 Watch sales.

Another potential sales amplifier for the Watch is if the 2016 iPhone models are absent the audio port. This creates even more demand for Bluetooth headphones, which the Watch could use. Wearing a Watch while using headphones could be the normative behavior for people who exercise.
